Glossary

Week 1

  • Taxonomy  -  the science or technique of classification
  • Interstitial  -  describing the interstice or intervening space or interval between things (particularly a series of alternating, uniform spaces and parts.  
  • Propinquity  -  nearness, proximity (e.g. of place, time, relation/kin)
  • A priori  -  Latin 'not before'.  Not based on a prior study or examination. Valid independently of prior examination.
  • Schema  -  diagram or plan.  Underlying order or pattern.
  • Empirical  -  derived from experience, observation

Week 2

  • Coefficient  -  In Maths, a number or quantity placed (generally) before and multiplying another quantity, as 3 in the expression 3x.  In Physics, a number that is constant for a given process, serving as a measure.

Week 3

  • Artifact  -  An object  made by human beings especially with a view to subsequent use.
  • Paradigm  -  A framework containing basic assumptions and ways of thinking shared by members of a discipline of group
  • Descry  -  To see something (unclear or distant) by looking carefully
  • Ascriptivity  -  To Ascribe.  To credit or assign to a source; to attribute

Week 6

  • Automatism - Freeform expression executed without conscious thought
  • Omniscient - Having complete or unlimited knowledge, awareness of understanding; perceiving all things
  • Determinism - In philosophy, theory that all events including moral choices, are completely determined by previously existing causes
